Žitná pole (Rye Fields)

In the past ages, when Vyšehrad was still full of fields, the rye was very common to be grown there. The field’s horizon rose above the heads of pilgrims who wandered through the fields. One of those paths went bordering the graveyard. In those places some pilgrims and local folk noticed white human skulls laying or floating around the pathways. Some of the skulls even followed the pilgrims. It’s well known that one of the local undertakers was saying that he even talked to the skulls: „Just wait, you buggers, just tomorrow I’ll lay you to rest as you should.“ Yet in the morning, all he found in the hole he fell in during the horrific experience of last night’s was just the hat he lost during the evening.

V minulých století, kdy byla ještě po všech koutech na Vyšehradě pole, se zde hojně pěstovalo žito. Břeh pole rostl až nad hlavy poutníků, kteří cestami v něm procházeli. Jedna taková cesta šla I podél hřbitova. V těchto místech několik poutníků a místních lidí vidělo v cestičkách poletující či povalující se bílé lidské lebky. Některé z poutníků lebky cestičkami pronásledovaly. Nejznámější je vyprávění jednoho z tehdejších hrobníků, který údajně na lebky promluvil: „Počkejte – vy mršky – však já vám zejtra ustelu, kde se patří,“ ráno však ve výmolu, do kterého při hrůzostrašné noční scenérii upadl, našel pouze vlastní ztracenou čepici.
